Small Animal  Ultrasound Service

Dr Nicky Cassel offers a mobile ultrasound service to the Pretoria and Johannesburg region. She will come to your practice to scan those difficult or complicated cases. Abdominal and soft tissue ultrasound examinations, as well as echocardiography and thoracic ultrasound examinations are offered. In fact, if you have a case that you feel may benefit from an ultrasound, contact Dr Cassel and she will discuss the case with you and the feasibility of ultrasound. Fine needle aspirates if deemed necessary, can be conducted during the same study (see guidelines below).

The service is offered on an appointment basis. The practitioner will receive a verbal report at the time of completion of the study and a written report, via email or the VIS website, will be sent to the practice within 24 hours. An invoice will be issued upon completion of the study and payment must be made within 24 hours of issue to enjoy the cash discounted fees - see Procedures and Fees. . Non-cash cases will carry an additional administrative account fee. Payment is made into the Vet Imaging Specialists bank account.

Ultrasound  imaging guidelines

Patients must be adequately starved (if applicable for abdominal ultrasound) and clipped before the radiologist arrives. For abdominal scans, the patient should be clipped from xiphoid to pubis and flank fold to flank fold. If a patient may not be shaved, please discuss with the radiologist before the time so a contingency plan can be arranged. For musculoskeletal ultrasound, the “normal” contralateral joint/region should also be clipped for comparative purposes.

The radiologist will provide an imaging trough or echocardiography table but will require an electrical plug in close vicinity to the scan area. An adequate scan area is required, preferably a quiet room/area which can be dimmed or darkened. The patient must be adequately restrained and sedation may be required.

Bookings should be timeously cancelled or postponed, 24 hours prior to the scheduled appointment. Failure to do so may incur a fee.
